Mennonite Central Committee volunteers hold a Relief Sale and Auction in Edmonton every three years. This local event provides significant funds for MCC to carry out its work, specifically in three areas:
- Relief: Efforts provide emergency assistance such as tents, blankets, food and medical care after disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis
- Development: Efforts provide capacity building, agricultural training, teachers, nurses and more
- Peace with Justice: Efforts provide advocacy, mediation, and skills training at the government, local, and family levels in peace building
In fiscal 2007, there were 56 countries with MCC personnel, MMC provided financial support to 70 countries, and 21 countries received material assistance and/or food assistance. Here in Alberta, MCC operates the Community Justice Ministries, Peace Education and Promotion as well as Mennonite Centre for Newcomers in Edmonton.
The MCC Relief Sale and Auction is a very important fundraiser in Edmonton, across Canada and the United States. Our goal in Edmonton this year is $200,000 in sales, where 100% of the funds received will go to MCC.
Some of the groups within MCC that will feature booths: Ten Thousand Villages, The Canadian Food Grains, Second Time "Round" (recycled goods), the MCC Water Table.
This year Relief Sale and Auction will take place on July 4 & 5, 2008 at Millennium Place in Sherwood Park, Alberta. We begin on Friday afternoon with a Bike a thon, a supper of roast beef and auction. Saturday is the official opening with a Pancake Breakfast and the Main Auction. Items sold at auction are mostly hand made from wood working to quilts. Ethnic food will be for sale throughout the day.
This is one time that the slogan "YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!" is absolutely true.
